Niclas Riepshoff

Erziehungskunst is an exhibition by Niclas Riepshoff that transforms GUTS into a staged classroom environment. Drawings are pinned to a green board while the lower legs of unseen teenagers protrude from behind the space’s curtains. The exhibition stages an audience more absorbed in fooling around than in looking at the works, shifting attention away from the individual drawing toward the social scene in which it is encountered.

For Riepshoff, making a drawing every day is a self-imposed discipline. The drawings resist distinctions between sketch, school exercise, and finished artwork. Displayed on the green board, they retain the provisional quality of notes rather than autonomous aesthetic objects.

The exhibition is accompanied by a short interview with the artist conducted by the ten-year-old Arthur Bonjour-Löser. Adopting the directness and curiosity of a child’s perspective, the conversation offers an alternative mode of mediation that mirrors the exhibition’s interest in learning and play. Together, the staged classroom and the interview question who is authorized to teach, evaluate, and interpret art. Erziehungskunst ultimately proposes education not as the transmission of knowledge from expert to novice, but as a process of dialogue and negotiation.
